About Beeboard
by Tobias
In 2022, my partner and I bought our first house. It had a garage. The first thing we did, of course, was start converting it into the optimal home wall.
As an ambitious climber and engineer, things got out of hand quickly. I wanted the customizability of a spray wall but the convenience of LED-lit problems. I looked at existing spray wall apps and reached out to a few, asking if they had an open-source version I could hook my custom LED support onto. I had no desire to build an app from scratch. I just wanted to add LED control to something that already worked.
None were interested.
So I found myself building one from scratch. Having a "lab" in the garage turned out to be a huge advantage. I could quickly iterate on ideas and test them during my own sessions. What started as a LED controller grew into a full climbing app with problem tracking, circuits, session logging, analytics, and social features.
Along the way, I think the app has become possibly the best spray wall training app, even with the LED features excluded. The multi-angle grading, circuit system with validated hold transitions, and the training calendar are things I built because I needed them for my own training.
I didn't plan to make a product out of it. I knew the step from a viable home DIY solution to a stable product is big. But I've now reached a point where I think it would be great to share it with others. I truly believe we can bring spray walls back into focus by making LED systems easy to install and affordable, using standard off-the-shelf hardware instead of proprietary locked-down systems.
I hope my love for climbing and spray walls comes through in this app, and that it brings you as much joy as it does for me, my partner, and our friends.

Why "Beeboard"?
Our address is Biberg, which translates to "mountain of bees" in Swedish. We named the garage gym Bikupan (the Beehive) and the board became the Beeboard. The name stuck and eventually became the name of the app too.
